Functional Groups in Organic Chemistry

They are known as functional groups, the structural features that enable the classification of compounds into families. A functional group is a group of atoms that exhibit characteristic chemical behavior within a molecule. Tables 1 and 2 display common functional groups in organic chemistry. Some functional groups contain only carbon-carbon double or triple bonds; others include halogen atoms; some contain oxygen, nitrogen, or sulfur.
